2026-06 World Food Safety Day 2026

This year again, EU Specialty Food Ingredients is celebrating World Food Safety Day, organised by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to raise awareness of the importance of food safety and to inspire action to prevent foodborne diseases.

This year’s slogan is “From burden to solutions – safe food everywhere”. And specialty food ingredients, which are essential to the modern-day food chain (see our factsheet here), play their part. For example, specialty food ingredients can be used to:

  • Stop foods from deteriorating too rapidly, e.g. by preventing undesirable micro-organisms from growing, or by slowing down the chemical reactions that make them go off.
  • Maintain a food’s nutritional profile, for example by preventing vitamins, essential amino-acids and unsaturated fats from degrading
  • Mitigate the formation of undesirable components such as acrylamide generated in a wide range of cooking processes.
