2025-10 Behind the evidence – How to interpret scientific research

EU Specialty Food Ingredients is pleased to present its new booklet “Behind the evidence – How to interpret scientific research”. This digital guide is designed to provide a clear and accessible introduction to the fundamental concepts of scientific research, explain the differences between various research methods and show how to spot scientific misinformation.

Research is now widely accessible online and read well beyond academic settings. When communicating about scientific studies, whether in online forums, as an influencer or through media publications, it is essential to be sure that results are interpreted properly, and to avoid making misleading, disproven or even sensationalised claims.

This digital guide responds to the growing need for reliable orientation among readers who may not have formal scientific training but wish to follow, discuss and replicate evidence on topics of interest. The brochure can serve as a practical working aid to support accurate and balanced communication. It also includes a checklist, which can be used as a brief reminder of what to look for when interpreting scientific evidence.

Saskia Kliphuis, President of EU Specialty Food Ingredients, says: “The booklet was created to explain research methods and to provide our members and all readers with a reliable compass for interpreting studies responsibly without sensationalism. Science evolves, but its foundation remains the rigorous examination of evidence. Our aim is simple: raise the quality of science communication, so that decisions about specialty ingredients are grounded in evidence, not headlines.”
