2023-04EU Specialty Food Ingredients at CCFA53

14th April 2023: The 53rd session of the Codex Committee on Food Additives (CCFA) took place between 27th and 31st March in Hong Kong. EU Specialty Food Ingredients was represented by the Chair of our CCFA working group and is happy about the following developments:

General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA)

The Committee noted that the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) had granted an acceptable daily intake (ADI) “not specified” for Riboflavins and recommended the inclusion of Riboflavin from Ashbya gossypii (INS 101(iv)), a new type of Riboflavin, into  the GSFA. According to its own Preamble, the GSFA “should be the single authoritative reference point for food additives at Codex”.

JECFA priority list

The priority list of substances proposed for evaluation by JECFA that is recommended for endorsement includes a number of substances that were supported by EU Specialty Food Ingredients, such as Gellan gum low-acyl clarified, a number of food emulsifiers and Rosemary extract.

All recommendations shall be subject to discussion and endorsement by the 46th Codex Alimentarius Commission which is scheduled between 27th November and 2nd December 2023.
