Today is International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.

Globally, about 13% of food production is lost between harvest and retail, and a further 17% in households, foodservice and retail combined. This means that a third of the total amount of food produced is wasted (source: United Nations).

Food waste is therefore a global problem that requires urgent action. Here, specialty food ingredients can play a key role. For example, preservatives and enzymes keep products fresh for longer, reduce spoilage and also preserve food without affecting taste, texture or nutritional value. Overall, longer-lasting products mean less waste throughout the supply chain, from farm to fork.
