2026-09 International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste: The contribution of specialty food ingredients
On 29 September, EU Specialty Food Ingredients joins the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in celebrating the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. This year’s theme, ”Transformative Potential of Reducing Food Loss and Waste“, highlights how reducing food loss and waste can improve food security and nutrition, reduce environmental impacts and support economic growth.
The specialty food ingredients sector continuously innovates to help extend products’ shelf life, improve production efficiency and upcycle side streams into valuable ingredients and food applications. These solutions support circular economy objectives while helping to preserve the quality, safety, and enjoyment of food.
Examples from our sector include technologies that help reduce food waste in dairy production, preserve bakery products for longer, and transform production of co-products into new resources. By helping manufacturers make better use of raw materials and reduce waste throughout the food chain, specialty food ingredients can contribute to a more resource-efficient food system.
